Here are some comments from visitors to The Eden Retreat. We would love to welcome you here!
A scorching hot week in pretty Palamartsa. The pool was a Godsend and we even ate one meal standing in it, with our plates of food balanced on the edge. Sliva, mulberries, cherries, plums and apricots were in abundance and we were made welcome in the shops and streets of the village. We loved the bird and insect live and Pete saw a big polecat and, also, a Golden Oriole.
Comfortable and stylish accommodation – even a dog visitor laid on – Butty. Please feed and water him if you stay – he’s a lovely playful character, but shy.
It’s amazing how long you can spend doing not-a-lot, in a hammock reaching for cherries off the tree. The sounds of the birds – including nightingales! - is wonderful. As is the rattle of donkey carts in the lane.
An enchanting village with very friendly people, despite us having only 2 words of Bulgarian. I have never eaten so many cherries!
Eden Retreat is a beautiful, tranquil setting capturing the relaxing, calm Bulgarian traditions. The wildlife sounds and picturesque views are outstanding.
Inside the building Carol and Tony have all the amenities and the place was very homely and welcoming - with champagne on our arrival!
Our grandchildren came to stay only for a day's visit and refused to leave, crying on our last night when we had to leave - not because they'd miss "Nanny and Grandad" - but the pool, hammock and garden where they had played their games!
Thank you for a wonderful week!
Wonderful place, big enough for couple or family. Highly recommend for everyone who needs to chill a bit and escape from busy everyday life!!! Five star to the owners as well so warm and helpful, thanks a lot!!!Xx
"This is a fantastic space to just be... Relaxing, beautiful, comfortable and in the heart of nature. The wildlife is superb, and when we stayed we had a range of lovely bird and insect species. We were especially enamoured of a pair of red backed shrike that make the garden their home! Would definitely recommend and can't wait to stay again!"
"I have to say, I have now seen this place and it is amazing, just beautiful, Tony and Carol, the owners should be very proud, I would have no trouble recommending this little piece of heaven to anybody.... truly breathtaking."
"An absolutely fabulous place! From the gorgeous garden to the superb private pool, the luxurious bedrooms to the spacious kitchen/dining area, The Eden Retreat has it all. The quiet village location is fabulous and the warm hospitality of hosts Tony and Carol really adds to the relaxing vibe. Stargazers will appreciate the lack of light pollution making for an easily visible blanket of stars on a clear night. I was even lucky enough to get a clear view of the Milky Way during my stay, which was very cool indeed! I thoroughly enjoyed my recent visit and will certainly be back again in the not too distant future. If you want a real chill out holiday then check this place out."
This place is exactly what we needed! A charming, quiet, tranquil spot to simply sit and relax. It may sound odd, but the variety of "nothingness" to do was great. Do we simply sit on the couch with the doors open and enjoy the view? Maybe go for a swim, or just relax with a book in one of the many cosy little spots? See - so many options and none of them involving our kids!
It has been a wonderful and relaxing time. Carol and Tony have thought of everything to make this place a true retreat. Next time we will bring the kids and let them enjoy also...maybe! :)
"Gorgeous! The pool area is wonderful, great for just relaxing around. Tranquil, loads of wildlife, little touches like the hammock and seating area are great, and was perfect for chilling out. Will certainly be back!"
"There are also magical birds here. I don't mean beautiful birds...but truly magical. "
"A great place!"
"A beautiful place set in a quiet part of the village. The pool and the garden are so relaxing and the owners will make sure that you are well looked after. All the best in this Tony and Carol."
"Had a really nice evening at The Eden Retreat great fun in the pool with the kids! Good Banitsa too! Yum!"
"Such a Magical, Spiritual place try a visit!"
It was what we expected! A stay in a remote village , calm and green, with sounds of chirping birds and mooing cows! The kids had fun especially with wonderful hosts and their pets. It is a wooden house, clean and the bedrooms had a nice romantic touch to them. New experience walking down to the traditional kitchen setup with all essentials. Bathroom is not attached (surprising to kids). Thank you, dear Tony and Carol, for making this trip memorable to the kids with your stories, music and love.

“The house is a place of fairy tales!"
“The place is unique! The hosts are very kind and hospitable people who valued our relaxation and didn’t bother us for a moment. The reality is much more beautiful than the pictures. We have been in many places, but we will gladly return. It is worth going to!”
“Къщата е като място от приказка!"
“Мястото е уникално! Домакините са изключително мили и гостоприемни хора, който не ни притесниха и за момент. Реалността е много по красива от снимките. Били сме на много места, но тук с удоволствие ще се върнем. Заслужава си да отидете!”
“Had a wonderful stay, Tony and Carol! Really beautiful place and perfectly tranquil - just what we needed!”
“Eden Retreat is the inspiration of a British family who have worked overseas for many years and found their home in a quiet Bulgarian village that takes you back a century to unpaved roads, pony or donkey and traps, glorious sunflowers gilding the surroundings, fruit trees everywhere you turn and an idyllic, private retreat all to yourselves.
There are two beautiful bedrooms plus a canvas home all of which provide comfortable beds and everything you need in order to escape and indulge yourselves. With only birds and the sound of frogs as accompaniment, a good size swimming pool and lovely hot (or cold if you prefer!) showers, kitchen and sitting room it is truly a home from home. We had the most amazing stay and found it almost impossible to leave to come back to the reality of life in the 21st century.
Luxury, quirkiness, ridiculously good value! For those wanting to explore outside the village there are history, culture, lakes, beautiful Veliko Tarnovo and tons more. Spend all summer there and you would still want to come back.”
The side and the house were pleasant very much; big well-groomed territory. The house have anything accessories , kitchen convenient. Pool good and pure. Hostess very friendly and pleasant. As a gift left us a bottle of young wine, it is a cute compliment. :) There were only most pleasant impressions) , we liked this place! Recommend!
The Eden Retreat is ideal for a couple who wants to be alone or a group wanting privacy. It has everything you need for your stay. There is a 3000 m2 private garden, pool, beautiful starry sky and wine provided by the landlady.
We hadden een fijne tijd in dit speciale plaatsje. Erg leuke inrichting. Het is super fijn met een zwembad op het terras. We genoten ervan. Zalig. Bedankt.
We had a lovely time in this special place. Very nice decor. It is super nice with a swimming pool on the terrace. We enjoyed it. The kitchen is minimally equipped for self-catering but the owners help are very happy to help you. They are very friendly and helpful. Eden is located in a charming environment. We could pick fruit from the trees both in the garden and on the street. Saved. Thanks.
Before The Eden Retreat was built there was a camp site there called “Smokie Nights” – here are some reviews from then!
“A Mind Blowing Adventure”
After taking many holidays that involved sitting next to the pool, we decided we wanted a more adventurous break. It was hard to decide, but we'd heard about a new campsite through some friends of ours that often visit Bulgaria that sounded right up our street! You see, we're adventurous, but we also like our comfort and the campsite in question, Smokie Nights Campsite, offered 'Glamping', huge bell tents with real beds!! WIN!
I emailed the guys to book, and paid a very reasonable sum for a week in one of the large Glamping tents. We booked some cheap flights to Burgas and then got a taxi for the ride to Palamartsa, which was again, quite reasonable (About £60 or so for a 3 hour drive). We were driven through some very picturesque quaint villages, and, we eventually reached our destination, all be it over some very bumpy roads, but that's adventure!
On arrival we were greeted by the lovely couple who run the campsite, Carol and Tony. We were shown our large tent, which was clean, spacious and had a full size bed which was extremely comfortable. They then gave us the tour, a small quaint basement bar (Be careful if you're tall, those beams hurt), a lounge area that had some basics such as microwave, toaster, kettle and seating which looked out over the campsite, and a communal dining area. All were clean and well cared for. There was also a large communal campfire area which had benches and tables. We spent many a night sat around the campfire with other guests enjoying local beers (2 lev each, around 80 pence) and it seems the campsite is very musically inclined, if you play a song around the campfire, you get a free shot of the local Rakia (Sip it, don't down it, I made that mistake).
As we were tired from our journey we settled down for the night, and we had the best night’s sleep we'd had in a long time! In the morning I decided to go test the shower and toilet facilities. I always dread doing this on a campsite, but I was wrong! The showers are better than the one we have at home with heaps of hot water and they're powerful too! Toilets and showers are clean and user friendly!
Carol, the owner came around at 9am and took orders for breakfast, breakfasts were simple, but good and had a very reasonable price tag (1 lev per item, around 40p). We took a walk around the village which was VERY Bulgarian, horse and carts going back and forth, elderly people sat on door steps who revelled in smiling and waving at us each time we passed by.
We found a little spring in the village that you can drink from, it apparently has healing properties, it certainly felt that way in the heat! We also noticed the abundance of fruit trees everywhere, we tasted a lot of the fruit and it was DELICIOUS! If at all unsure about what's edible just ask the campsite owners, they'll show you which to eat!
It turns out the campsite owners were also hosting a music festival in the town square, it was an amazing night with lots of great acts performing! There was also traditional Bulgarian food on offer which was nice, as well as hand made jewellery, Bulgarian souvenirs etc. We found everyone to be extremely honest! We even had locals chasing us because we'd given them too much money!
The village is very quiet when the music festival isn't happening, but, there is a small town a short drive from the campsite which the owners were only to happy to take us to! The town had a few bistros, clothing shops, tobacconists, bars etc. Everything was BEYOND cheap! For a full meal in a bistro it cost around £2-£5 each depending on what you order, that included drinks!
At night we noticed the sky was incredibly clear due to lack of light pollution etc! We then found out the campsite offered guests the free use of a telescope; it was amazing to see the night sky with such clarity. The Milky Way was clearly visible even without a telescope!
The next day we decided to update friends and family, we asked about the Wi-Fi and we were taken to a house and vineyard owned by the owners just across the road. It's a mere 2 second walk. The Wi-Fi is apparently going to be updated so that it's available on the campsite itself, but to be honest, sitting in the vineyard picking fresh grapes well updating family isn't exactly a chore! We also gave the owners our phones to charge, you have to sign each item in and out for peace of mind.
I mentioned to the owners that we'd always wanted to visit Romania, Bucharest in particular, and said that we were hoping that's where we'd take our next vacation. To our amazement they told us they'd take us on a tour to Bucharest if we wished, the total cost was £200 (But split between 4 of us, £50 each was very, very reasonable for the 8 hour round trip). It was a very long day, but worth it! Bucharest was beautiful and we got to see many of the landmarks including the largest government building on earth! It was stunning! The architecture was mind blowing on pretty much every building, and many of the shops were the same as you'd see in any modern city. Quaint little cafes lined the streets. We also, naturally, got to cross the infamous Danube river, quite a site to behold!
Our final day was a day of relaxation; we decided we needed to jump into a nice cold pool! The owners called us a taxi and we headed back to Popovo, it has a large park with outdoor public swimming for 3 lev, around £1.20. There's also a bar next to the pool. It was a great day and we soaked away all our travelling aches and pains.
All in all it was an amazing adventure, made even more amazing by the warm welcome we received from the owners! They did everything they could to make our stay more comfortable.
A few points to consider: The village is fairly remote; the good news is they don't charge through the nose on site like most remote places. You should learn a couple of Bulgarian phrases! Most don't speak English apart from the site owners, but Ivan, the site caretaker was only too happy to teach us the basics which saw us through without a hitch.
Highly recommended! Would go again in a heartbeat!
We arrived to find a wonderful tent already pitched and complete with double bed plus an extra, bedside table, rugs, lamps, mosquito repellents, shower gel etc. All was spotless, with fantastic hot showers, kitchen with everything you would need, a lovely terrace, swimming pool, flowers and cherries everywhere and peace!
This is a fascinating area with so many birds to spot, nightingales to lull you to sleep, beautiful Veliko Tarnovo only an hour away, but history on the doorstep. Roman fort, Thracian mounds, rock monasteries (the nearest being the oldest on the Balkan peninsula) and the gentle bucolic rhythms of life as it must have been for a century, made us long to live there rather than tear ourselves away for work.
It is possible to fly to Bucharest or Varna, both about 2 hours away, with a pick up from airport to tent. Once through Bucharest it is just countryside and villages, with so much to see. How fantastic to spot storks nesting and to have fragrant blossom all the way. We will be back!
Not a hotel, but so much better - freedom, fresh air, beauty, immensely kind, generous people, and incredibly cheap. Luxurious hotel - YES - but not if you will only go to hotels.... We were glamping, but there is plenty of room for any size of tent, and it only gets cheaper!
